Gun laws can restrict, as well as increase security within a home. First, having a firearm in a house gives you a fighting chance against a burglars, or anyone else who is armed. Criminals are as scared of a firearm pointed at them as anyone else, “Criminals don’t like finding themselves on the business end of a gun barrel any more than the rest of us do, which is why 74% of them actively try to avoid breaking into houses when the owners are home”(Kellerman) Just the possibility of the person they would be robbing frightens and discourages criminals. In situation like these, gun laws that focus on self defense could be beneficial in protecting a person’s household. Next, there is also the chance of a child or someone who is not registered to have a gun get their hands on it. A statistic by NCBI says,”Studies have shown that unintentional shootings are four times as common as occurrences of gun use in legitimate home defense situations.”(Kellerman) Having a gun in a household causes a greater chance of shooting someone not meant to be shot. “You’d actually be more likely, statistically speaking, to shoot someone by accident than you are to shoot a home invader.”
